Kranskop of Klaasvoogds

Kranskop of Klaasvoogds
The monthly Hermanus Wine Club was all about Kranskop and Newald Marais braved the cold and windy weather to present his wines of the Klaasvoogds Valley, near Robertson. Seven of the eight vintages that Kranskop have on offer were tasted. Each of the wines were stunning beauties of outstanding quality and value. The Pinot Noir Kranskop Pinot Noir was a beautiful example of his wine and showed us that the best wines do not have to be the most expensive, or certainly not from specific areas. It was a great tasting and thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. Thanks Newald!  Read more

Ashbourne

Shimmering Ashbourne!

Aromas of lemon and lime awake the senses and on the palate you will be rewarded with a fresh, somewhat crisp citrus flavour mellowed by the fruit weight of the Chardonnay.
80% Sauvignon Blanc with the rest unwooded Chardonnay. Quite delicious for any occasion.
Bottle Price: R69.95
Buy 6 bottles or more and pay only R66 per bottle
This is a saving of R23.70 per case of 6 bottles
Don’t delay, place your order now.

Ashbourne wines are named after owner and founder, Anthony Hamilton Russell’s great, great grandfather, Lord Ashbourne who was Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the late 1800’s.
Kate Lewin of “The Eighth Art” was appointed to implement the design of our label.
We wanted a label with a strong “Belle Époque” feel which evoked family ownership and the flora and fauna of the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley where the wine is made. The “who from” and “where from” needed to underpin the overall style.
The “Belle Époque” was a highly social time of optimism, enjoyment and the pursuit of beauty almost to the point of abandon. Fine wine was very much a part of this – an everyday part of this. A graphic artist was retained by Kate who had a good feel for design from this period, and we looked back at numerous labels and images from the period. The Belle Époque had its signature colours, which we incorporated with a twist – they had to have an inspiration from our surroundings in the Hemel-en-Aarde area. The blue/green came from the faded inside wall paint of an old abandoned farm cottage in the valley. The vivid and more faded pink came from the inside and outside of a certain type of mussel shell we find on the sandy beaches of Walker Bay (the Atlantic Ocean Bay which cools and moderates our vineyards). The orange came from the small, rare Arum Lily frog we get on our property.
We rate family ownership and hands-on involvement highly and this was expressed on the label by incorporating aspects of the crests and the family mottos in Latin of Lord Ashbourne’s family, The Hamilton Russell family and the Nel family (Anthony’s wife’s family). The Pelican, Goat, small six point star and cockle shells all derive from the various family crests.
Flora and fauna of the area are reflected in the lilies, frogs, sunbirds and shells. The pelican too can be seen in the valley from time to time.

All things good starts with a B

Easter seemed so far away and now it’s upon us. The Wine Village will be open over the Easter Weekend. The times are as follows: Good Friday, 18 April 2014 from 09:00-18:00; Saturday, 19 April 2014 from 09:30-17:00, Sunday 20 April 2014 from 10:00 to 15:00 and Easter Monday, 21 April from 09:00-18:00.
Each year there are many new wineries that are introducing their wines to the general public. We are lucky enough to have five new wines from two new wineries to present to you. The first is from Bramon, a winery in the Plettenberg Bay area. Their portfolio includes a Sauvignon Blanc, and two MCC’s: a Sauvignon Blanc and a Blanc de Blanc.
Blake’s Family Vineyards are a husband and wife team Andries and Marinda Blake. Andries Blake has been a part of the wine industry for the last 23 years and has worked in some well know wineries. His eldest son is following in his father’s footsteps and is studying at Elsenburg in Stellenbosch.  The two wines that they have on offer are a white blend, the Tourmaline and a Cape Blend, Amethyst. Tourmaline is named after a semi-precious stone and consists of 40% Chenin Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Viognier. The wine has an aging potential of 3 years.
The Amethyst is a Cape Blend with 45% Shiraz, 35% Pinotage and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has been matured in new French oak barrels for 24 months and is a reflection of the Swartland terrior in the high fruit concentration in the wine. It has an aging potential of 6 to 10 years. Very limited amounts of each wine are made and as Andries states “This enables us to nurture our vines and wines and create gems. This philosophy has led to the names for both blends.”
Brenda’s are one of the suppliers for the Wine Village delicatessen and there is always something new that will be perfect for the chef at home. There are also many different types of brandies and spirits as well as craft beers for those who enjoy something other than wine. There will be a surprise for the customers and their children on Saturday, 19 April 2014 brought to you by the Easter Bunny.

Get Crafty – Ciders & Beers

Craft beers have become more popular over the last few years, which allows for the consumer market to be introduced to hand-crafted and specially selected beers.  Not all craft beers are made equal, just like with wine, there are different types of craft beer, such as ales and ciders as well as different types of ales.
The Wine Village stocks twelve types of craft beers and ciders from five different producers and are always on the lookout for new products and producers. Wild Beast Ale is one of the newest producers to be sold from the fridge, with Amber and Honey ale to choose from.
Local producer, Birkenhead Breweries, is a firm favourite, with their Honey Blonde and Pilsner selling fast. Much like wine, these beers are tasted and rated according their taste, appearance and smell. The Karusa Caveman’s Dry craft beer is a darker, fuller beer with hints of espresso and dark chocolate, whereas the Birkenhead Honey blonde is a lighter, fruitier beer.
The ciders in store are apple, pear and brandy cask, from William Everson, with their own distinct flavours and are refreshing. The Dragon Fiery Ginger Beer is an alcoholic ginger beer, which goes to show that there is always something new to try out.

Come take a look at our selection of finely made craft beers and try something different.
